Jasperlite Hill The Worlds Largest Gemstone

I took a trip to Jasper Hill in Ishpeming Michigan to see the Worlds largest gemstone. This is an entire mountain of Jasperlite which is an alternating layer of Jasper and Hematite, an iron ore.

Jasper is red in color and Hematite is dark gray and can be quite shiny. The combination is spectacular to see. The camera just cannot do it justice.

You can see that some people tried to pry off pieces with a rock hammer on top of the mountain. I was smart and went down the hill to harvest some free samples that had fallen off on their own. They are dirty so they will be easier to see once I clean them off later.
