Jamaica's Carey McLeod looked like he was never going to land after one of his attempts in the World Athletics Championships long jump final went wrong.

Long jump star Carey McLeod had World Athletics Championships viewers in stitches with his failed attempt in the final.

The Jamaican, 25, was one of the medal contenders in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday (August 24) night - although you wouldn't have thought so based on his third jump.

McLeod, who rather unusually also competes in the men's triple jump, slipped on the board, which sent him flying up into the air like something out of a superhero movie.

After spending what seemed like an eternity hanging over the pit, he landed just past the eight-metre mark in nasty fashion. Luckily he managed to avoid injury.

The hilarious moment was soon clipped up and shared on social media, with fans reacting in their droves. One joked: "Great new sport. Could watch that all day long."

A second echoed: "Man just invented a new sport. Far better than the long jump. May need a longer sandpit tho."

A third reckoned McLeod was doing his best impression of Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana when he somehow avoided giving a penalty away earlier this month, commenting: "Fantastic imitation of Onana v Wolves."

"Cracked me up this, looks like Uncle Phil just chucked him out his house in Bel Air," wrote a fourth. A fifth replied: "Oh man, now I want a Looney Tunes Olympics."

While another popular joke amongst football fans was said by many, including a sixth who captioned the video: "Penalty to Liverpool."

To add insult to injury for McLeod, he missed out on the medals on a countback after matching the 8.27m distance of compatriot Tajay Gayle.

Their fellow countryman Wayne Pinnock looked to be on course for gold. But he had to settle for silver after Greek Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou edged him by two centimeters with his final jump.
