Could be CIA but I think it's safe to say Putin had a hand in this. I figured he was going to off the guy after banishing him to Belarus. That seemed like a ruse to cool things down and install a false sense of security in the man. Publicly challenging Putin's power during the Ukrainian conflict by having Wagner roll up to Moscow was a disrespect that had to be answered in a spectacular way, bluff or not. Also, Wagner was in debt and Prigozhin's services were no longer needed.
I don't care what Scott Ritter says: You cross Putin and attempt to embarrass him like that, you're a dead man walking!
