OSIRIS-REx slings an orbital web around an asteroid in order to collect a sample | 4K
NASA's OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, and Regolith Explorer) spacecraft accomplished an incredible achievement during its journey to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu. To collect a sample of the asteroid's surface material and return it to Earth, OSIRIS-REx performed a precisely planned maneuver known as the "Slingshot Orbital Web."
This complex maneuver entailed carefully maneuvering the spacecraft into a low-altitude orbit around Bennu, known as the "Bennu Bump," using its thrusters. OSIRIS-REx essentially built a temporary gravitational bond with Bennu by approaching the asteroid's surface and carefully altering its course, similar to swinging a weight on a rope around your finger. This slingshot-like orbital route was created to allow the spacecraft to gather regolith or loose surface material.
This intimate orbital dance, which resembled the formation of a web of gravitational connections, enabled OSIRIS-REx to interface with the asteroid's surface in a controlled manner. The spacecraft's Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) reached out to make gentle touch with the surface and acquire the necessary sample material. The mission's accuracy and scientific relevance were both highlighted by the effort's complexity.
After successfully collecting the sample, OSIRIS-REx left Bennu and returned to Earth, carrying a fragment of the asteroid that might reveal critical insights into the beginnings of our solar system and life on Earth.
The OSIRIS-REx mission and its Slingshot Orbital Web maneuver showcased not just space exploration's technological capabilities, but also the passion of scientists and engineers in uncovering the secrets of the cosmos. The gathered samples are expected to provide vital information on the composition and history of asteroids, therefore improving our knowledge of planetary formation and development.
