Moon phases are the different shapes of the Moon that we see from Earth as it orbits around our planet. The Moon does not produce its own light, but reflects the sunlight that hits its surface. Depending on the position of the Moon, the Sun, and the Earth, we can see different portions of the Moon’s illuminated side.
There are eight main phases of the Moon: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. Each phase lasts for about 3.7 days and represents how much of the Moon’s disk is visible from Earth. The phases repeat in a cycle of about 29.5 days, which is called a lunar month or a synodic month.
the phases of the Moon are not the same for everyone on Earth. They depend on the observer’s location and perspective. For example, people in the Northern Hemisphere see the Moon’s phases in a different way than people in the Southern Hemisphere. This is because they are looking at the Moon from opposite sides of the Earth.
