I Said No More Chickens (WRONG)

Chicken math is real and it is inevitable. Another broody hen, another (almost) dozen chicks. Send help.

Here on our farm it has been a chicken kind of year. We purchased new laying hens and our egg production has picked up substantially since our golden comet hens came of age. We upgraded our brooder, built a couple of chicken tractors, and raised our first meat chickens to feed our family. And on top of all that, several of our hens (with or without our blessing) have hatched out a clutch of chicks. We thought we were done but oh no, we were wrong.

The latest batch of birds comes courtesy of a hen who snuck away and spent three weeks hiding in the loft of the barn. If I were a flightless bird I don’t think I would attempt to hatch eggs 8+ feet off the ground, but I’m not, and she did, so as soon as we realized there were babies up there we knew a rescue removal was coming quickly.

Before we could move the 11 new chicks into our brooder we had to move the last round of unsolicited chicks out. Fortunately for us we just finished our new chicken tractor build which means these month-old birds can be moved to a safe place on pasture. It took a bit of juggling but everyone is now settled into their new home.
