Copyright infringement by Gary F Milne

In the United States, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works.

This means that even if someone has purchased a digital copy of a book, they are not legally allowed to make additional copies and distribute them. This includes giving a copy to a friend. Doing so could be considered copyright infringement.

It’s important to note that this applies even if the book is being given away for free. The act of copying and distributing the book without the copyright holder’s permission is what constitutes infringement.
