Being a prominent figure in global aviation, the C-5 Galaxy has played a pivotal role in America's strategic airlift endeavors for multiple generations. Despite enduring the effects of extended usage on its dependability, assessments revealed that the C-5s still retained a substantial 80% of their structural lifespan. As a result, rather than phasing out these immense workhorses, Lockheed Martin introduced a proposal in September 1998 to modernize the C-5 fleet by incorporating state-of-the-art avionics and engines.

The inaugural flight of the re-engineered C-5M occurred in 2006, and the initial fully upgraded C-5M Super Galaxy was handed over to the USAF in 2009.

To provide a sense of scale, the C-5M spans over two-and-a-half times the length of an NBA basketball court, stands as tall as a six-story building, and boasts a wingspan that exceeds half the length of an American football field. In terms of weight capacity, this behemoth can manage a load equivalent to approximately 210 large sedans at maximum takeoff.

The cargo compartment within the C-5M Super Galaxy is incredibly spacious, allowing it to accommodate nearly all of the Army’s air-transportable combat equipment, including massive items like the 74-ton mobile scissors bridge. It possesses the capability to uplift two M1 Abrams tanks and has the capacity to transport nearly a company of troops and their equipment to any location worldwide through aerial refueling.
