Video Description:
For over a decade, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has been unceasingly observing the Sun. Orbiting Earth, SDO has amassed a staggering 425 million high-resolution Sun images, accumulating a vast 20 million gigabytes of data within the last 10 years. This trove of information has led to countless new revelations about our nearest star's inner workings and its impact on the solar system.
Armed with a trio of instruments, SDO captures a snapshot of the Sun every 0.75 seconds. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) tool alone captures images every 12 seconds across 10 distinct wavelengths of light. This ten-year time lapse exhibits imagery captured at the 17.1 nanometer wavelength, revealing the Sun's outermost atmospheric layer—the corona—in extreme ultraviolet light.
Compressing a decade of solar activity into just 61 minutes, this video displays the ebb and flow of the Sun's behavior as it journeys through its 11-year solar cycle. Noteworthy occurrences such as planetary transits and eruptions are highlighted.
While SDO has vigilantly kept its gaze fixed upon the Sun, there were instances it momentarily looked away. The dark segments in the footage occur when Earth or the Moon eclipses SDO, passing between the spacecraft and the Sun. A more extended blackout in 2016 resulted from a temporary glitch with the AIA instrument, which was effectively resolved within a week. The off-center Sun images were captured during SDO's instrument calibration.
In the future, SDO and other NASA missions will persist in observing our Sun, providing deeper insights into our cosmic position and essential data to ensure the safety of our astronauts and assets. Throughout this time-lapse, fleeting yet remarkable events come into view.
