See Jesus in Genesis 38: Jesus in the Old Testament
You have read through Joseph's story starting in Genesis 37, but when you read Genesis 38 you did not understand how this fits into Joseph's story.
Here is the key to understanding Genesis 38: You must see Joseph's story as Jesus's story, and understand the history around Jesus's life, his rejection, death and resurrection. As you look at it through this lens, you see how Israel and Jesus had been separated for a long time. But that is not the end of this family story.
God had his plan play out perfectly the whole time.
You see Judah depart with his staff and seal. This has an amazing resemblance to what happened around 7 AD in Jerusalem. The Sanhedrin wept in the streets and cried out, "The Scepter has departed from Judah, but Shiloh has not come".
They cried this out because there was an ancient prophecy in Genesis 49, where Jacob tells the fate of each of his son's lineage, their tribes. In this, he prophesied that the Scepter and the Staff shall not depart from Judah until Shiloh (Messiah) comes.
In 7 AD, the Romans took away the Judicial power of Judah, from the Sanhedrin and this was the first time that Israel could no longer rule over their own people in Judicial matters. Another words, they lost the Scepter, the "Rulers Staff", and they thought Messiah had not come.
However, Jesus was already there, on the scene and walking among them.
