While the old Europeans used to call them “Snowy Mountains”, “Hungarian Mountains” or "Transylvania's Mountains", the range’s modern name can be translated into “Rocky mountains” from the old Slavic word “skála”, meaning rock or cliff. The Carpathian Mountains or Carpathians are a mountain range system forming an arc roughly 932 mi long across Central and Eastern Europe, making them the second-longest mountain range in Europe.
With the picturesque forests and steep slopes, the Carpathian chain of mountains is a popular European destination for those who love extreme sports.
