New Moon: This is the first phase of the lunar cycle. The moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, so we can't see the illuminated side. The sky appears moonless.

Waxing Crescent: After the new moon, a slim crescent of light begins to appear on the right side of the moon. This crescent gradually grows larger each day.

First Quarter: About a week after the new moon, half of the moon's surface is illuminated and visible from Earth. This is the first half of the lunar cycle.
