NEOWISE: Revealing Changes in the Universe
NEOWISE (Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) is a space telescope and infrared imaging satellite that was launched by NASA in December 2009 with the primary goal of discovering and characterizing near-Earth objects (NEOs), including asteroids and comets, that could potentially pose a threat to our planet. However, beyond its mission to detect hazardous objects, NEOWISE has also been instrumental in revealing various changes and phenomena in the universe.
NEOWISE operates by using its infrared sensors to detect the heat emitted by objects in space. This ability allows it to observe objects that might be difficult to detect using visible light telescopes. The telescope has not only provided valuable data on the size, composition, and orbits of near-Earth objects but has also contributed to a deeper understanding of the broader universe.
Through its observations, NEOWISE has uncovered and contributed to the understanding of a range of astronomical phenomena, including:
Asteroids and Comets: NEOWISE has detected and tracked numerous asteroids and comets, helping scientists understand their orbits, compositions, and potential threats to Earth. It has also provided insights into the structure and characteristics of these celestial bodies.
Minor Planets: NEOWISE has identified and characterized minor planets within our solar system, contributing to our understanding of their properties and origins.
Star Formation: The telescope's infrared capabilities have allowed it to peer through dusty regions of space, revealing young stars and protostellar systems that might be hidden from visible light observations.
Galaxies: NEOWISE's observations have provided data on distant galaxies, shedding light on their infrared emissions, which can be indicators of star formation activity and other processes.
Brown Dwarfs: NEOWISE has discovered and studied brown dwarfs, which are often referred to as "failed stars" due to their insufficient mass to sustain full-fledged nuclear fusion.
Trans-Neptunian Objects: The telescope has helped identify and characterize objects in the outer regions of our solar system, such as trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), providing insights into the dynamics of these distant bodies.
