Benzema OFF THE MARK as Al-Ittihad thrash Al-Riyadh 4-0 | Signs of Nuno rift? | BMS Match Highlights

Karim Benzema scored his first goal in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ittihad on Thursday and at the same time appeared to scotch rumours of a major split with club coach Nuno.

Reports in local media had suggested that the Ballon d’Or winner was ‘not comfortable’ with the situation at the Saudi champions and that Nuno had said that Benzema ‘did not fit his style’ and was refusing to make him captain.

However, the French striker was given the armband for the game and it was all smiles throughout as Al-Ittihad cruised to a 4-0 victory at Al-Riyadh.

Benzema scored the opener on 17 minutes following a surging run at the Al-Riyadh defence and Abderrazak Hamdallah took his tally for the new season to four goals from three games after he added a penalty and a spectacular overhead kick, all before the break.

The visitors eased back in the second half, but even when chances came for Al-Riyadh, they couldn’t take them.

Their best came from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, but Saleh Al Abbas saw his effort saved by Al-Ittihad goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe.

That brought Nuno’s side back to life and Benzema turned provider deep into stoppage time, setting up substitute Saleh Al Amri for an easy finish.

Al-Ittihad maintained their 100 per cent start to the season and kept a third straight clean sheet.

Newly promoted Al-Riyadh suffered their first defeat of the campaign and remain on four points from their three games so far.
