The first time a NASA team visited the moon was during the Apollo 11 mission on July 20, 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first and second humans to walk on the moon's surface. Michael Collins, the third member of the Apollo 11 crew, remained in orbit around the moon in the command module.
