Leonid Rogozov (1934–2000) was a Soviet-Russian doctor and surgeon who gained fame for performing a self-appendectomy while stationed in Antarctica. He was part of the sixth Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1960-1961, stationed at the Novolazarevskaya Station.

During his time there, Rogozov fell seriously ill due to acute appendicitis. With no possibility of evacuation or access to another surgeon, he decided to perform the surgery on himself. He enlisted the help of his fellow expedition members to act as assistants during the procedure.

On April 30, 1961, Rogozov performed the surgery in a makeshift operating room, using local anesthesia. He managed to remove his own appendix over the course of about two hours, with his assistants handing him instruments and providing assistance as needed. The operation was successful, and Rogozov's health gradually improved after the procedure.

His remarkable feat of performing a self-appendectomy under such extreme conditions garnered international attention and admiration. It demonstrated his exceptional medical skills, resourcefulness, and determination to save his own life.

Leonid Rogozov's story serves as a testament to human resilience and adaptability in the face of challenging and life-threatening situations. He continued his medical career after returning from Antarctica, working as a surgeon and contributing to various medical fields until his death in 2000.
