India’s Chandrayaan-3 made a soft and successful landing on the south-polar region of the Moon on Aug. 23. The landing of Chandrayaan-3 will advance India's space ambitions and expand knowledge of lunar water ice. The water ice is potentially one of the Moon's most valuable resources. Scientists are interested in pockets of ancient water ice because they could provide a record of lunar volcanoes and the origin of oceans on Earth. If water ice exists in sufficient quantities, it could be a source of drinking water for Moon exploration and could help cool equipment. However, attempted landings on the Moon’s south pole have failed before. Watch this video to know what makes the Moon's south pole so special and why major countries like the US, Russia, China and India are racing to reach there.
