The systems engineer who made this complaint believes that the XM30 capabilities will be limited by this strict requirement. I know my first thought was how could 55 tons not be enough? However, it is possible because the XM30 is going to field a brand new 30mm or 50 mm autocannon. That alone will eat up a lot a lot of tonnage. This turret will be remotely controlled and unmanned. Why does the vehicle need a giant cannon? We’ll the XM913 chain gun produced at Picatinny Arsenal is going to shoot a brand new ‘Supershot’ warhead that will replace the old school traditional High Explosive round that we’re all familiar with.

Because the military has had larger caliber autocannons for decades. In fact the prototype 35 and 40mm caliber cannons were developed by Rheinmetall all the way back in 1987 for the German Marder. I think the reason the US Army is only now starting to adopt it is a similar reason as to why they are going back to the battle rifle. There is a whole lot of new sensor technology and optics that are allow gunners to find and accurately hit targets farther away. Drone identify targets miles away allowing you to leverage the abilities of larger cannons. When I spoke to general dynamics at the AUSA convection they gave me a hint about how the armor industry sees the future doctrine going. Because the XM30 will likely fire off small drones from tubes on the back of the vehicle that search for the enemy an identify targets are greater distance.
