Drinking Of The Wine is an old Traditional African American Spiritual. Bascom Lamar Lunsford learned it at an African American Church in 1902. It`s on his CD, Ballads, Banjo Tunes and Sacred Songs of Western North Carolina. I sing and play it on the mountain banjo in whats knows as the two finger thumb lead banjo tuning. It`s an uplifting spiritual song that southes the soul. I hope to do another guitar version someday as well.

Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, that holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine

If anybody asks, tell em I`m gone
Tell em I've gone, to Gallilee,
You oughta been there, for a thousand years,
Drinkin' of the wine

If my mother comes calling for me
Tell her death has silenced me
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine

If you get there before I do
Tell my Jesus I'm a-comin' too.
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinkin' of the wine.

Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
---

Drink it, members, drink it free
It flows from the root of a tender tree
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine

If anybody asks, about that time,
Everbodys dead and gone on high,
You ought been there for a thousand years,
Drinkin' wine.

You may mourn, sinner, mourn,
Christ`s mercy will flow on you
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine

Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
