Symposium on Post-Traumatic Growth 4 p.m. – 5:50 p.m.
Chair – Richard Bradshaw, Ph.D., Trinity Western University
S3 Richard Tedeschi, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, UNC Charlotte, NC

Posttraumatic growth: A new focus in Psychotraumatology

The frightening and confusing aftermath of trauma, where these fundamental assumptions are severely challenged, is also fertile ground for another set of outcomes that can be observed in survivors: posttraumatic growth. The term posttraumatic growth refers to significant beneficial changes in cognitive and emotional life beyond previous levels of adaptation, psychological functioning, or life awareness, in the aftermath of psychological traumas that challenge previously existing assumptions about self, others, and future. Five domains of posttraumatic growth will be explored in this presentation: greater appreciation of life; warmer, more intimate relationships with others; a greater sense of personal strength; recognition of new possibilities or paths for one’s life; and spiritual development. A cognitive model of posttraumatic growth will be presented, with an overview of personality factors related to posttraumatic growth, the role of social support, and narrative processes. Methods of facilitating posttraumatic growth in clinical work with trauma survivors will be described.

Educational Objectives: 1) Explore five domains of posttraumatic growth: greater appreciation of life; warmer, more intimate relationships with others; a greater sense of personal strength; recognition of new possibilities or paths for one’s life; and spiritual development. 2) Learn about a cognitive model of posttraumatic growth, the personality factors related to posttraumatic growth, the role of social support, and narrative processes. 3) Understand specific therapeutic methods for facilitating posttraumatic growth with trauma survivors.
