Letter Exposes Flawed Data and Omission of Contradictory Information

In a secret letter to the CDC dated November 16, 2021, a top epidemiologist and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, along with seven colleagues, expressed their apprehensions about the CDC manipulating data to create a false narrative favoring the efficacy of masking at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, despite scientific evidence to the contrary.

The letter, recently obtained by the Epoch Times, was written by Prof. Michael Osterholm, a professor of public health at the University of Minnesota, charged that flawed data was being promoted by the CDC to the public, claiming that masks worked. The authors cautioned that such actions could damage the credibility of science in general, misrepresent evidence, and foster false expectations among the public.

A Call to Correct Misleading Information
Osterholm's letter not only criticized the CDC's approach but also pointed out discrepancies in the COVID-19 Real-Time Learning Network, a platform jointly developed by the CDC and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

The authors expressed concerns that selective data presentation and downplaying of studies that contradicted their narrative were occurring on these platforms. Osterholm specifically highlighted a lack of supporting evidence for claims that masks effectively prevent severe COVID-19 disease and virus transmission.

A Plea for Scientific Integrity
The letter urged the IDSA to rectify the situation by removing any misleading information from their website and podcasts. Osterholm, an advocate for scientific rigor, called for a more careful scientific review of the available data to accurately determine the role masks play in preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission. He and his colleagues offered their expertise to aid the IDSA in updating its scientific assessment. However, the response from the IDSA and CDC appeared to emphasize the importance
