Recovery plays a key role in our ability to build muscle. The longer we have to wait for recovery in between workouts the fewer opportunities we have to train stimulating new muscle growth.
Tight and sore muscles can keep us from our scheduled workouts and we use tools like foam rollers, massage balls and I even have this hook thing with a ball on the end of it that I use to get rid of a knot I commonly get in my traps down by my shoulder blades.
Recently I had a product sent to me that replaces all of those. The DEO-M8 massage gun. I never thought there would be a product out there that would replace a massage ball for the bottom of my feet. But before we go over how I like to use it, let’s take a look at the product.
The gun has one of the lowest prices on the market, but it has a high quality feel with a reasonable weight to it and a super comfortable handle, that feels like a silicone rubber. The gun itself has 6 different vibration settings and I use most of them. With the blue light showing which setting your at and the red light indicating how much charge the battery has.
It comes with 4 attachments a round head which works great for most areas. A flat head that works magic on the bottom of my feet. Then they have a bullet-shaped one that is good for getting deeper into areas where we might be more thickly muscled like our glutes to target the sciatic. The last attachment is fork shape and this is for along your spine or it would work well if you wanted to massage along either side of your Achilles.
Now I’m primarily using it for recovery, but it can be used to warm up the muscles pre-workout instead of using a foam roller. To do this you run it along the muscles that are going to use during your workout spending about 30 seconds on each muscle.
The areas that I get muscle knots and tension in the most are my traps, glutes, calves and the bottom of my feet. These are my main trouble spots.
When you start working an area with the massage gun you go over it lightly and if it is your first time using the gun turn it on before placing it on your skin and start at a lower vibration setting. On really sensitive areas like my calves sometimes I find the highest setting to be quite intense and will first go over the muscle at a lower setting for about 30 seconds before spending another 30 seconds going over it at a higher one.
I found using a massage gun on my calves way more effective than doing foam rolling and it provides better results in less time.
Now when you find a muscle knot like the one I often have in my traps you just hold it over the spot for a few seconds, but just lightly you don’t have to press hard just let the vibration do the work.
The tension that I feel at the bottom of my feet can be quite painful and it is likely tied into the tension I feel in my calves as it all originates from running. The best thing I’ve found up till now to relieve this pain is a massage ball. I would stand on it applying as much pressure as I could take and roll it around under my foot focusing on the arch and it worked, but the pain while doing this was insane! With the DEO-M8 I get the same results, less the extreme discomfort.
Using the flat head on the massage gun I go over the underside of my feet for again around 30 seconds on each foot with most of the time being spent on the arch.
Because the massage gun is sold so close to cost I had trouble negotiating a deal for my subscribers but I was successful and they have offered an additional 5 % off when you use my affiliate link in the description and the discount code FITAND50.
Now watch this video next on how to warm up your shoulders pre-workout to keep them injury-free. So you can keep working out while having fun.
