Located along the riverfront road towards the south end of town, Wat Mahathat was supposedly established in the year 607 CE by a general from Vientiane.

The highlight is a 24 meter tall white chedi, Phra That Nakhon, adorned with golden dots and surrounded by numerous Buddha images. It features a large square base where relics of important monks and where a gold Buddha image is enshrined. Some sort of stupa or marker has probably existed here for a very long time but what you see today was constructed in 1922.

It’s one of the nine sacred chedis frequented by Thai merit makers in Nakhon Phanom province. A small museum in the adjacent building displays a collection of old Buddhist and Hindu statuary but it was locked up so was unable to see inside. There’s also a fairly large hall that looks very nice from the outside but there are no murals and only typical Buddha images inside.

The temple is not the best in the area but with it being located near the port and river walk it’s a nice stop while seeing other things in town.
