NASA, or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is a United States government agency responsible for space exploration and aeronautics research. It was established in 1958 in response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik. NASA's mission is to enable a safer, more secure, efficient, and environmentally-friendly air transportation system through aeronautics research, operate the International Space Station and prepare for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit, explore the Earth-Sun system, our own solar system, and the universe beyond, and develop space science and exploration technologies. NASA is composed of four mission directorates: Aeronautics Research, Science, Space Technology, and Human Exploration and Operations. The agency is led by an administrator who oversees its operations. NASA also supports research in science and technology through various grant programs and initiatives.
