Guatemala Elections: Crusader Bernardo Arevalo comes out of obscurity to win the run-off election

Guatemalan anti-corruption crusader Bernardo Arevalo is all set to be voted in as the new president, preliminary results have shown. This is a victory that until recently seemed impossible and which many voters hope will end years of rule dogged by allegations of graft and authoritarianism. Speaking to reporters shortly after preliminary election results showed him winning a majority, Arévalo said the people have "spoken loudly. He added that he had already received calls from the current President congratulating him on his victory as well as the presidents of Mexico and El Salvador. His victory comes as violence and food insecurity roil the country, triggering fresh waves of migration. Guatemalans now represent the largest number of Central Americans seeking to enter the United States.
