We have spectacular views of our lunar journey from the Orion spacecraft and NASA's Space Launch System rocket. View the Moon up close from cameras on the outside and from within the spacecraft.
The only spaceship that can send people from Earth on Artemis voyages into deep space and return them to Earth from near the Moon is Orion. Orion is more than just a crew module; it also has a launch abort system to keep astronauts safe in the event of a launch-related emergency, as well as a service module built in Europe that serves as the engine that powers Orion and provides the astronauts with power, water, oxygen, temperature control, and a heat shield that can withstand fast returns from deep space. The only rocket able to launch Orion with humans and their supplies on Artemis trips to the Moon is SLS, the most potent rocket in the planet.
On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Orion was launched by the SLS rocket from Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. An unmanned flight test of our SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft, and exploration ground systems called Artemis I is being conducted in preparation for future Artemis missions, which will lay the groundwork for sending people to the moon's surface, establishing a permanent presence on and around the moon, and opening the door for people to walk on Mars.
