The most important islands of this lake are Kabudan Island (Qoyun Daghi), Ashke Daghi, Arzoo and Spire. Lake Urmia was a part of the Paratetis Sea millions of years ago. Amir Abbas Jafari, Director General of Crisis Management of West Azerbaijan, said that over the past two decades, the height of Lake Urmia has decreased by an average of 40 cm every year, and now 95% of this lake is dry.
