There have been more than 5,700 fires across Canada this summer. Over 1,000 are currently burning and more than half are out of control, and the Northwest Territories and British Columbia have been particularly hard hit with evacuation orders in place.

The vast majority of residents have now been evacuated from the city of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. At a press conference on the evening of Friday, August 18, the city’s mayor Rebecca Alty said: “The evacuation has been a huge success. We’ve basically managed to evacuate the whole city now.”

A state of emergency has also been declared in British Columbia, as a fast-moving wildfire moves closer to the city of West Kelowna. Around 15,000 residents have been evacuated with another 20,000 under an evacuation alert.

There are also around 1,000 other smaller fires burning across the west of the Canada.
Wildfires have been rapidly spreading across the Canary Island of Tenerife and firefighters are still struggling to control the situation today, August 18. Earlier this summer major fires also broke out in Portugal, Greece and Hawaii.
