About the photo:
A street vendor in Egypt sells mummies (~1865).
In the 19th century, the business of selling mummies in Egypt flourished, fueled by the Western world's fascination with ancient Egypt and its artifacts. Egyptomania, or the obsession with all things Egyptian, had a significant impact on European culture, art, and fashion. A growing interest in Egyptology prompted many wealthy Europeans and Americans to collect Egyptian antiquities, including mummies, as exotic curiosities and status symbols.
As a result, Egypt developed a thriving black market for mummies and other ancient artifacts. Locals looted tombs and sold mummies to impatient collectors. Often the mummies were also ground into powder and sold as a substance believed to have medicinal properties. The business of selling mummies was so lucrative that sometimes fake mummies were created to meet the demand.
