In the 2016 presidential race, Donald Trump fundamentally altered the dynamics of Republican primary debates, morphing them into electrifying live TV occasions that drew an unparalleled viewership on networks like Fox and CNN.

Yet, in a fashion reminiscent of a lead actor departing from a beloved TV show, Trump has chosen to abstain from participating in the inaugural debate of the 2024 Republican primary season. This event is scheduled to air on August 23 from Milwaukee and will be broadcasted by Fox News. This development has been confirmed through reports from various sources.

Insiders who wished to remain anonymous, as reported by The New York Times, have alluded to a possible strategy where Trump might counterbalance the impact of the debate by engaging in an interview with Tucker Carlson. Carlson, a former Fox News host who was removed from the network, could conduct this interview on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. While Trump's campaign has not formally authenticated this intention, the possibility remains under consideration.

Despite enjoying a commanding lead in polls compared to his rivals for the nomination, Trump has hinted at his reluctance to partake in Fox News' coverage of the debate.

Fox News has refrained from offering any remarks concerning Trump's participation or the potential legal actions pertaining to Carlson. Notably, Carlson, even subsequent to his removal from the air on April 24, is still being compensated by the network. In June, Fox News dispatched a cease-and-desist letter to Carlson, alleging that his online programs on X breach the stipulations of his contract, which entitle him to an annual compensation exceeding $15 million until 2024.
