Burkina Faso And North Korea

Ibrahim Traore - Since 2020, West Africa has been a witness to a series of military coups. The most recent of these incidents occurred in Niger. Up until now, the responses from both the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have ranged from imposing severe sanctions to displaying a certain level of indifference. Nonetheless, ECOWAS has opted for a more proactive approach to addressing the Niger coup and has issued a warning about potential military intervention if the deposed president is not reinstated. Despite this, ECOWAS has not been able to follow through on its threats of "military intervention" so far. Nevertheless, these threats from the regional organization have prompted neighboring countries of Niger to express their support for the new military regime in Niger.
Niger's supporters have included Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Russia, and it appears that ECOWAS enjoys the support of some of its member states, the United States, as well as prominent global entities like the UN and EU, and possibly France. Interestingly, there's another nation that might potentially align itself with Niger. Since 2017, North Korea has faced UN sanctions, causing numerous countries to sever their ties with the nation. Nevertheless, Burkina Faso surprised Western observers by re-establishing diplomatic relations with North Korea. August 2023
