You there, late Roman! It serves you right that your empire is falling. Serves you right that germanic tribes are overrunning your cities, sacking, burning, looting and pillaging their way through the provinces of your once great empire. For wasn't your empire built on blood and conquest in the first place? Weren't your ancestors evil, expansionist brutal conquerors, who unrightfully conquered many lands, enslaved many people, and now you are just getting what you deserve? This at least, dear friends of late Roman history, is a recurring narrative that I often read in the Youtube comment section. I know, stupid me, reading comments, what do I expect on Youtube these days, yet still, it somehow seems that many consider the Romans to have been especially evil, and that they hence deserved to Fall. But is that true? Were the Romans more evil than other empires of those times? Did the late Romans really deserve to fall?
