Recently, NASA created a plan called Prospects for Future Human Space Flight Missions to Near-Earth Asteroids that outlines how to deploy an astronaut crew to an asteroid that is nearing Earth. President Obama's 2010 speech at the Kennedy Space Centre, when it was first introduced, is where the proposal first emerged.

Obama made his comments in an effort to calm down the uproar that his decision to abandon the Constellation Program—the final mission to the moon—had caused. Before launching a crewed voyage to Mars, he suggested sending an astronaut crew to an asteroid that was getting close to Earth as a consolation prize. An upgraded version of the Obama plan, the current proposal—which has not yet received funding—uses a SpaceX Starship instead of an Orion that is launched from a Space Launch System rocket.
Obama's suggestion was not a serious one. It swiftly transformed into the Asteroid Redirect Mission, which aimed to send a small asteroid—or even a boulder from one—into lunar orbit so that an Orion with a crew could visit it. Nobody was serious about the concept.

One of the foremost authorities on minor celestial bodies, including asteroids and comets, Dr. Richard Binzel of MIT, was extremely dismissive. Instead, he recommended a scan of asteroids that were getting close to Earth, some of which might end up endangering the planet.

When President Trump took office and launched the Artemis program, NASA was ordered to send astronauts back to the moon before launching crewed expeditions to Mars, and the Asteroid Redirect Mission died a fast and unmemorable death. Artemis, in contrast to earlier lunar missions, has achieved significant technological and political success. Successfully completed was Artemis 1, an unmanned mission to orbit the moon.

Soon after taking office, President Biden adopted Artemis. The Artemis II crew has been chosen for the circumlunar mission, which won't start until the end of 2024.

Asteroids that are approaching Earth have not gone unnoticed by NASA during either the Trump or Biden administrations. The idea of deflecting an asteroid in the case that it is headed toward Earth was proven by the DART Mission. The Near-Earth Object Surveyor telescope will be launched by NASA no sooner than September 2027 in order to find and identify asteroids that are heading toward Earth.

The concept of sending a SpaceX Starship to an asteroid nearing Earth is considerably superior to Obama's original proposal. Anywhere in the inner solar system, starships may transport 100 metric tons or more. A modified version of the rocket will carry Americans to the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972. Elon Musk envisions constructing his Mars city using a fleet of Starships.
