Baumgartner's jump was part of a scientific research project aimed at advancing our understanding of human physiology and safety for future space travel. The mission also aimed to break the sound barrier without any form of propulsion other than gravity. The jump took place at an altitude of approximately 39 kilometers (24 miles) above the Earth's surface.
