Why 2D-gray gray scale images are often referred to as B-mode images?

Echoes that return to the transducer distort the crystal element and generate an electric pulse that is processed in to an image. Higher amplitude echoes produce greater crystal deformation and generate a large electronic voltage. They are then displayed on the image as a brighter pixel than lower amplitude echoes
