Selim developed a strong reputation among his military troops while serving as the governor of Trabzon thanks to his conflicts with the Safavids, slave raids, and a campaign in the Caucasus against Georgia.When Shah Ismail's brother launched a 3,000-strong Safavid army against Selim in 1505, Selim routed the army, murdered many of them, and took their weapons and supplies.After Shah Ismail marched through Ottoman territory to confront the Dulkadirids in 1507, he defeated the Safavids once more in the Battle of Erzincan. Shah Ismail sent an army of the Safavids to Erzincan, but Selim assaulted them and routed them.[12] The following year, he conquered western Georgia, the Caucasus, Imereti, and Guria.
