Clair de Lune 4K Version - Moon Images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

This visualization employs a digital 3D representation of the Moon, constructed using global elevation maps and image mosaics sourced from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. The purpose of this creation was to complement a performance of Claude Debussy's piece, "Clair de Lune," by the National Symphony Orchestra Pops. This remarkable event, conducted by Emil de Cou, took place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on June 1 and 2, 2018. The occasion was part of the festivities commemorating NASA's 60th anniversary.

"Clair de Lune," which translates to "moonlight" in French, was first published in 1905 as the third movement within the Suite Bergamasque composed by Debussy. In contrast to the other sections of the suite, this particular movement, "Clair," exudes a tranquil, contemplative, and somewhat wistful atmosphere, evoking the sensation of a solitary stroll through a moonlit garden.

The visual presentation was crafted akin to the style of a nature documentary, characterized by seamless transitions and a predominantly stationary virtual camera. Throughout the sequence, the viewer accompanies the Sun's journey across a lunar day, observing both sunrises and sunsets casting their glow upon prominent lunar features. An illustrative example includes the expansive ray system encircling the Copernicus crater, which comes into view as morning shadows retreat, only to gradually fade into darkness as night extends its embrace.
