Leonidas was the king of Sparta who led 300 chosen warriors to defend Greece against the Persian king Xerxes I in 480 B.C.E. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas and his party resisted the overwhelming Persian army for several days, delaying their advance through a narrow pass. Despite heroic efforts, they were eventually surrounded and died, but their sacrifice became a symbol of courage and unwavering defense of the homeland.
