The Meridian Police Department has installed 12 new traffic cameras as part of a pilot program to reduce traffic accidents and enforce traffic laws. The cameras are designed to read vehicle's license plates as they travel through intersections. Once the camera has read the license plate, the system talks to the NCIS computer system, which is connected across the United States. This allows law enforcement to quickly identify vehicles that are wanted or involved in criminal activity.
