Dry firing is a common practice for many gun owners, but is it actually ok? After watching this video, you'll be able to make a more informed decision about whether or not to dry fire your gun!
Centerfire Guns:
A centerfire gun is a type of firearm where the firing pin strikes the center of the cartridge's base to ignite the primer. The primer, when ignited, sets off the gunpowder inside the cartridge, propelling the bullet out of the barrel. Centerfire ammunition is named as such because the firing pin strikes the central part of the cartridge's base, where the primer is located. Centerfire firearms are typically more powerful and versatile compared to rimfire firearms. They are commonly used for various purposes including hunting, self-defense, target shooting, and competition.
Rimfire Guns:
A rimfire gun is a type of firearm where the firing pin strikes the outer rim of the cartridge's base to ignite the primer. Rimfire ammunition is named because the firing pin strikes the thin, raised rim around the base of the cartridge, crushing the soft primer located there. Rimfire firearms are generally less powerful than centerfire firearms and are often used for activities such as plinking, small game hunting, and recreational shooting. Rimfire ammunition is commonly found in calibers like .22LR (Long Rifle).
In summary, the main distinction between centerfire and rimfire guns lies in how the firing pin interacts with the ammunition's primer. Centerfire firearms strike the center of the cartridge base, while rimfire firearms strike the outer rim. This distinction affects factors such as power, versatility, and the types of activities the firearms are suited for.
