The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite and is about 1/6th the size of Earth. It’s roughly 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away from Earth. The moon’s gravitational pull causes tides on our planet. It takes about 27.3 days for the moon to orbit Earth and about the same amount of time to complete one rotation on its axis, which is why we always see the same side of the moon. The moon has a thin atmosphere called an exosphere, but it’s so thin that it’s almost a vacuum. The moon has been the subject of human exploration, with the first manned landing occurring during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
