As we all know that Russia and Ukraine have conflict for some time. But this conflict is not new. Today we will look into the facts hidden in the history which will help us understand that why Russia attacked Ukraine.
This all starts with 9th century where there was a state called as Kyivan Rus located in Eastern and Northern Europe. The modern nations of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine all claim Kievan Rus' as their cultural ancestor. The area was ruled by Vladimir the Great, who was the Grand Prince and ruled from 980 to 1015 A.D.
With the passage of time, a lot changed resulting in the emergence of communist state in 1900s, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics also known as the Soviet Union.
Initially the Ukraine inherited much of soviet nuclear arsenal on independence but later in 1994, Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement named as Budapest Memorandum. In this agreement, Russia guaranteed security and sovereignty of Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal.
In November, 2013, the president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych rejected an EU trade deal and signed a 15 billion dollar bailout from Russia.
Yanukovych’s government was toppled in February 2014.

Current conflict started with Ukraine continuously fighting Russian backed rebels in the regions of Donetsk and Luansk. Russia has once again sent its troops as Vladimir Putin want Ukraine to limit or stop NATO’s presence in Ukraine.
