When you live and work in a place like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, where stability is not guaranteed by the state, or the state is itself dangerous, protection, business and other transactions happen outside of government channels. This means knowing, being related to and even sympathizing with the Taliban, gangs, and even Putin and his thugs. This is a reality that we struggle to see and comprehend in the US. Not all people who know bad people are bad people. Sometimes, they are folks who get necessary things done through the means available.
