The first moon landing took place on July 20, 1969, when NASA's Apollo 11 mission successfully landed the Lunar Module "Eagle" on the moon's surface. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon while Michael Collins orbited above in the command module. Armstrong's famous words as he stepped onto the lunar surface were, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.
