40S&W is the perfect choice for a handgun

Thought exercise - You have to pick ONE caliber for handguns (not counting hunting purposes) and cover all your handgun related needs. That means if you need a super compact carry pistol, competition gun, mid sized EDC... all one caliber. What do you pick? All other factors apply, such as cost, availability of ammo and firearms, reliability, legality, pet peeves, your personal shooting skills... It is what YOU would take, not what you think should be someone else's choice. If your needs don't include a certain type of use then it doesn't matter.
