The Battle of the Marne: How the Allies Turned the Tide of World War I
The Battle of the Marne was a turning point in World War I. On September 6, 1914, the French and British armies launched a surprise counterattack against the advancing Germans. Using aerial and radio intelligence, the Allies were able to find a gap in the German lines and exploit it. The Germans were outnumbered and outflanked, and they were forced to retreat. The Battle of the Marne saved Paris and stopped Germany from winning the war quickly. It also started trench warfare, a four-year deadlock. The battle was very costly for both sides, with about 450,000 casualties in total. However, it changed the course of the war and gave the Allies time to prepare for the long fight ahead.
