Secret Invasion Episode 2: Promises" delves deeper into the complexities of the ongoing Skrull crisis. A personal journey unfolds, as Gravik, orphaned after his parents perished in the Kree conflict, comes into the limelight.
Flashbacks reveal a younger Gravik's encounter with Nick Fury in 1997, just two years after the events depicted in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Here, Fury's promises to the Skrull refugees of a safer home under his and Carol Danvers' protection come to light.
The episode cleverly employs timelines, contrasting Fury's failed promises of the past with the current situation of the Skrulls. It is revealed that Fury and Danvers never succeeded in providing a new home to the Skrulls. Instead, their role appears more manipulative, using the Skrulls as Earth-bound spies.
Talos offers more insights into the Skrulls' tragic past, including their loss to the Kree, resulting in their displacement from their home planet, Skrullos. Any Skrull who didn't join Emperor Drogge's colony sought refuge on Earth, as advised by Fury, indicating that a substantial Skrull population could be on Earth.
Gravik's motivation for vengeance against Fury becomes apparent at the Skrull Council meeting, attended by influential figures like UK Prime Minister Pamela Lawton, the NATO Secretary-General, and a familiar news reporter. In a surprising turn of events, Gravik is promoted to the position of Skrull General.
Sergio, another council member, hints at plans in place should the Avengers intervene, while a mysterious strategy named 'the Harvest' is associated with Gravik, although its specifics remain unknown.
Nick Fury, in a conversation with Rhodey, admits his reluctance to involve the Avengers, fearing the Skrulls' potential to replace them.
The episode wraps up with a dramatic cliffhanger as Fury is seen kissing a woman named Priscilla, played by Charlayne Woodard, who is shockingly revealed to be a Skrull. Their marital status, suggested by Fury's ring, adds further intrigue to this unexpected relationship. It seems "Promises" has set the stage for a riveting exploration of betrayals, secret identities, and the dire consequences of broken vows in the upcoming episodes.
