Ayahuasca has been hijacked. As with anything that becomes popular and trendy, it has become tainted by profit motive, and even in soome cases, prophet motive. And even though I definitely am horrified to see the 5k yearold plus tradition of shamans and ayahuasqeuros devoured by New Agey conventionality, it is also a fact that systems that don;t evolve become stagnant and die. So what is the appropriate course?

Having began my studies of ayahuasca and psychedelics over 30 years ago, and having studied with traditional Shuar, Kichwa, and Cofan shamans that are uninfluenced by the Industry, I have a very clear picture of pre and post commercialization ayahuasca. I also recognize that many indigenous practitioners have no cross training in complimentary disciplines, and no contact or understanding of the context of the lives and culture of the people that come to them for help. Growth and adaptation are essential to maximize investitures from ayahuasca experiences in this pivotal moment in hostory. But how do we protect the indigenous customs while embracing integration of complimentary systems? CArefully, and with great wisdom, it may yet be possible.
