MEPs to Adopt Recommendations to Tackle and Prevent Spyware Abuse in Europe | European Commissioner for Justice and Rapporteur Discuss Measures

In this video, MEPs are set to adopt recommendations aimed at addressing and preventing the abuse of spyware in Europe. The recommendations, based on the inquiry into the illegal use of spyware such as Pegasus, outline a range of proposals. These include investigations into suspected abuse, EU standards for spyware deployment, legal remedies for targeted individuals, strict enforcement of export control rules, the establishment of an EU Tech Lab for technical investigations, and coordination with third countries.

The video features closing statements by Didier REYNDERS, European Commissioner for Justice, and Sophia IN 'T VELD, Renew, NL, who is the Rapporteur. Commissioner REYNDERS emphasizes the Commission's stance on illegal access to citizens' data, stating that it is unacceptable if confirmed. The Commissioner also mentions addressing the use of Pegasus in Spain and Predator in Greece during visits to the European Parliament.

Sophia IN 'T VELD highlights the severity of the issue, comparing it to the movie "The Lives of Others" in which a repressive regime spies on its citizens. She urges the European Union to take action and empower itself to uphold the law, emphasizing the importance of not solely relying on national authorities when they are the perpetrators themselves. She also calls for a clear definition of national security, separate from blanket exemptions, stressing the need for a strong and decisive response to the democratic crisis.

Stay tuned to learn more about the adopted recommendations and the European Union's efforts to combat the abuse of spyware in Europe.
