Russia's Control of Natural Gas in Europe Explained

Why is Europe so dependent on Russia for natural gas? Since the 1990s, Western Europe has been the largest natural gas buyer from the Soviet Union and the current war in Ukraine has threatened that very important business relationship.

A number of factors are driving the increased reliance on the EU's reliance on Russia for hydrocarbon energy, but chief among them is the fact that the majority of European oil and gas resources are either depleted or in serious decline. Aside from Russia, prospects for meaningful domestic European production are at this point, nothing more than a pipe dream.

With the recent invasion of Ukraine, followed be a slew of sanctions being imposed on Russia by many nations, we can start to see just how fragile the energy situation is across the European continent.
